The Feel Good System
In the last few decades, a pervasive ideology of the educational system is that high self-esteem leads to more effective learning. Different state governments have mandated activities that focus on making students feel good about themselves, which take time away from the academic curriculum.
Rather than producing higher levels of academic achievement, this ideology contributed to copious amounts of daily affirmations, but yielded few academic gains. As a result, many colleges have to offer remedial math and reading courses even to high school graduates who graduated in the top third of their classes (Frase & Streshly, 2000).
Grade inflation has become a point of concern, as has the ideology that putting in effort merits a reward. This leaves thousands of high school and college graduates every year who are ill-equipped to deal with the fact that failure is an option outside of school and that feeling good about themselves isn’t enough to produce the quality of work that higher education and future employers will expect of them.
This feel-good ideology is more than simply an educational tenet. In The Truth About Bullshit, Laura Penny says that the common rhetoric of public discourse is some derivative of, “Everything is okay. You are loved, you are number one, you deserve a break, and the solution to all of your problems is one ideology away.” This discourse is present in marketing campaigns, religious institutions, and political campaigns. What it’s really saying is, “Don’t think too hard about it, and let us help you feel good about who you’re becoming.”
This discourse encourages people to sit back and take what they view as a well-deserved break from life. When they have so many different institutions and campaigns that are affirming them in their decision to ignore their problems rather than doing something about them, there is virtually no reason for them to work for anything if they are already “number one.”
Escapism is increasing with the vast amount of modern day technology. When a person is met with a situation that makes him feel bad about himself, he has no shortage of alternate realities to jump into in order to escape from what he doesn’t know how to deal with. Eventually, he will have little need for his actual reality since he feels that his self-esteem is being adequately boosted as it is.
Even certain religious denominations are losing their edge under this feel-good system. Many Christian mega churches, for example, are forsaking their rich theological heritage in favor of a much simpler system that doesn’t necessarily hang together, but it makes people feel good about themselves in the moment and come back again next week with their tithes and offerings.
Rather than encouraging attendees to ask questions about their faith and approach study of it from an academic perspective, these institutions are picking and choosing which commandments and stories to preach from the pulpit based on what they believe will please people and contribute to their sense of entitlement and appeal to their goodwill.
Of course we all
